In these Top Gear/Grand Tour specials, Jeremy Clarkson isn’t known for always picking the best vehicle for the job. Pinky and Perky’s practical joke highlighted just one of the Caterham’s problems when it came to this challenge. While it only happens twice during the special, both Jeremy and Richard delight in removing the switch from James’s car while he’s sitting in it, taking the piss out of him in the process since James had to get out of the car to get it back. A “kill switch” is another term used to describe the exterior ignition key which, if removed, will shut off the engine in the advent of a crash and prevent an engine fire. As with most Caterham models like this that are intended for amateur racing, it has a “kill switch” on the outside of the vehicle. When picking their cars, James went with a model that totally fits his personality-the Caterham 7 310R. If you love Top Gear and Grand Tour specials for copious amounts of scenery porn they provide, you certainly won’t be disappointed here. Throughout the special we see colorful small towns, lush jungle, and picturesque beaches-which are promptly dug up or blown up by the hosts as they search each locale for the missing treasure. Besides the French island on which the special begins, we’re also treated to lovely views of Madagascar and its Nosy Baraha island, which is alternatively known as Ile Sainte-Marie or “Pirate Island”. Scenery PornĪnd speaking of Réunion, one of the best parts of this special as with any of the specials are the copious amounts of beautiful scenery. For a bit of perspective, the second-longest domestic flight is Boston to Honolulu at 4,983 miles. As such, the island’s distance away from Metropolitan France makes it the outermost region of the European Union and the longest non-stop domestic flight from Paris to St. France’s organization is broken up into “Metropolitan France”, or what we think of as continental France including Corisca and islands off the coast, and “overseas departments and regions” such as Réunion. Instead of simply being a French dependency or protectorate, the island is legally part of the French Republic. The special kicked off on Réunion Island, which geographically and politically is a very interesting place. As you might imagine, they didn’t find it, but here are some of our favorite moments from their attempt. Armed with this bit of knowledge, three cars of their choosing, and sheer nerve, Clarkson, Hammond, and May sought to succeed where other treasure hunters had failed for centuries. Legend goes that he threw a cryptogram detailing where his buried treasure was into the crowd. The basic idea is that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May would go in search of the lost treasure of French pirate Olivier “La Buse (The Buzzard)” Lavasseur, who was captured in Madagascar and hanged on the island of Réunion in 1730. For the most recent special released in December 2020, the trio opted for a pirate-themed adventure called “A Massive Hunt”.
